Wally Finds’ Last Blog Post

This blog has been done as a part of our studies at Lund University. It has now been up and running for a couple of months and we have learned a lot on the way. We would like to thank all of you that have read our blog and those in one way or another have helped us in our work with it.

We hope that you have been able to use the information and that our blog has been a helpful way of collecting information about our topics and to information that otherwise only available is in Swedish.

And as Dr Seuss once said: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Traveling in Skäne, Helsingborg is worth seeing!

Helsingborg is one of the oldest cities in Sweden and has a lot to offer!

Things you have to see:

1. Kärnan

This is the tower is the remains of the medieval castle which was situated in Helsingborg from the early Middle Ages until 1676 when most of the castle, with the exception of tower, was pulled down. Today the tower is open for visitors, and the reward for walking the stairs all the way up to the top is a splendid view of the City and the sound.

2. City Centre

it’s characterized by old, small houses and buildnings and small shops with a large equestrian statue in the middle. It’s located in the old town part. Good neighbourhood to walk around.

3. Towns Hall

Helsingborg’s majestic Town Hall (Rådhuset) is located next to the main square (Stortorget). It was built in neo-Gothic style, with towers and pinnacles, lavishly decorated facades and a 65-metre-high bell tower, from which melodies can be heard across the city at 09.00, 12.00, 15.00, 18.00 and 21.00 every day. The Town Hall, completed in 1897, was designed by the architect Alfred Hellerström.

4. St. Mary’s church (Mariakyrkan)

The oldest part of Helsingborg lay on the top of the cliffs. Due to the abundance of herring in the Sound during the Middle Ages the shores below were taken over by fishermen, and a small Norman-style sandstone chapel was built for them. When the population grew and became more permanent the chapel was replaced by St. Mary’s Church (Mariakyrkan), still in use today. Building work started at the beginning of the 14th century, and the church was completed just over one hundred years later. The exterior is a beautiful example of Danish Gothic brickwork.

5. Sofiero Castle

rhododendron in late May and early June spreads its way down the slopes towards the strait in all colours you might want, and later in summer you can admire the rose garden. There is also a sculpture area, a totem pole and a hothouse, as well as opportunities to buy seed for your own garden.

WALLY FINDS JOLENE FROM SINGAPORE!

this is the last week where Wallyfinds interviews someone! And this week Wallyfinds…Jolene!!!

Jolene is from Singapore and currently studying Finance as an exchange student in Lund University.

What is one café you can recommend in Lund?

Mormors bageri. They have a wide selection of bread. I tried their wienerbrød and theirs is really very nice!

image

What is one place you will want to travel to from Lund?

Europe in general has some kind of charm to me and I want to see all these different sights. But if I’d have to choose a place it’d be Munich. I’ve some friends to host me there and had friends that went there…the pictures I’ve seen pictures of Munich are really pretty!

What is something you have discovered as an exchange student in Lund?

You can be as involved in the student life here or just choose to be more relaxed. The culture of this town makes me slow down my pace of life and allow me to appreciate more things that I tend to rush through back in Singapore. So there was this day where I just sat down and read through the book The Little Prince non-stop for an hour.

What is the one thing you learn about the Swedish culture?

They fika a lot! It’s nice because u get to find out more about each other and their cultures.

Vasaloppet (The Vasa Race)

Vasaloppet is a ski race which is arranged annually. It is 90 km long and runs between the town Sälen and Mora. The main event has more than 15 000 participants and is the oldest, biggest and longest endurance ski race in the world.

“Vasaloppet’s history begins already in 1520. Then Sweden was in a union with Denmark. Discontent with the Danish king was great, not least from Gustav Eriksson Vasa, whose opposition had resulted in his being imprisoned in Denmark. But the 24 year old Gustav managed to escape. After landing south of Kalmar in the spring of 1520 he began a long and dangerous march north. On his way, Gustav urged farmers and villagers to revolt against the Danish authorities, but to no avail. He then set his hopes on Dalarna, where the people were known to be tough and resolute, seldom giving way to decisions of authorities and kings. Gustav was hunted throughout Dalarna by the pursuing Danes, but the people sheltered and protected him from King Christian’s soldiers.

After a month fleeing through Dalarna, Gustav stood outside the church in Mora and spoke to the crowd. Only weeks before, his father and his brother together with some 80 other magnates had been beheaded in “Stockholm’s bloodbath”. Gustav asked how long they could accept such atrocities and urged them to take up arms. But the people wanted to confer with the neighbouring villages before deciding on war. The Danes were in close pursuit and, before he could get the answer he wanted, Gustav was forced to take to his skis and continue his flight west towards Norway.

A few days later news of King Christian’s brutal ravages throughout Sweden reached Mora, the people regretting then that they had not immediately supported Gustav. Mora’s two best skiers, Lars and Engelbrekt, sent in hot pursuit of the fugitive Gustav Vasa, caught up with him in Sälen. Gustav was persuaded to return with them to Mora to lead the fight against King Christian.

In 1521, with the men from Dalarna at the head, Gustav began his battle. It took two and half years before the war was over and Sweden was a free land. On 6 June 1523 at a national assembly in Strängnäs, Gustav Eriksson Vasa was elected king of a free Sweden. Now he is a symbol for the world’s biggest ski competition - Vasaloppet!” (Vasaloppet)

During the race it is customary to drink hot blueberry drinks. It is always held on the first sunday in March. This year that will be tomorrow and the 3rd of March. It is broadcasted on the Swedish public service channels.

Tired of Winter ?!
Try to think of spring and the first event: Valborgsmassoafton or easier Valborg. We introduced it in another article but I thought it was worth it to make a post about it.
This is a festival celebrating Walpurgis Night in the central and northern part of europe.
One of the main tradition is to light large bonfires but people also sing traditional songs, dance and of course drink ! This is very popular in student cities like Upssala and Lund, and I think this is the best place to celebrate it!
In Linkoping, people use to gather around the courtyard of Linkoping castle.
In Gothenburg, students from Chalmers University of Technology make a parade watched by 250 000 people each year.
Waiting for you to celebrate it with us in few weeks !!
